There are a number of reasons why people choose private sessions. Some people would rather not face their first experience
with yoga in front of a class full of strangers. Others find that yoga classes at a gym or studio just don’t fit
into their busy lives. Still others have specific physiological or emotional issues that need individual attention.
Private classes may also be helpful for those currently in group classes who want to concentrate on a specific issue.
While private sessions might be more costly that group sessions, they allow a unique opportunity to have your specific
needs addressed. When I work with private clients, we talk in the first session about what it is you want to achieve. Since
the premise of yoga is to "start where you are" I assess your flexibility and alignment in order to determine the best poses
for you.
There are many aspects to the practice of yoga. If you are new to yoga it is best to give yourself a period of time
to become acquainted. We work on a five-week plan that introduces you to the exercises (called ‘poses’ in yoga)
that address your goals and give you an overview of what yoga is about. If you are interested, we can also include yoga
breathing techniques and meditation practices.
After the five weeks, you have a choice of whether to continue with private sessions or move on to group classes.
How We Will Work:
Initial seession – 1 hour
During this consultation we determine your Ayurvedic type (dosha) and go through a short sequence of yoga poses to
establish a baseline from which to work. You'll also get some poses you can do on your own. We discuss your
goals for your yoga practice including any challenge areas you need to address. We will also discuss your interest in
establishing a personal practice.
5-week program
Each session: 75mins
After the initial session, I will design a 5-week program to introduce the yoga asanas and practices which are the most
suitable for your dosha and goals. As well, if your intention is to eventually go into a group class, we will also learn the
asanas most often taught in group classes.
The 5-week program will build knowledge of the proper execution of the selected asanas, and the benefits of each asana.
These will then be structured into a sequence that will serve as the basis for a home practice.
In addition to the weekly session, at least one additional home practice session on your own per week is recommended. An
outline will be provided each week for that additional session. The outline give sample 10-minute sessions that you can either
do individually or combine into a longer practice session.
After the 5-week program, you can either decide to continue to work with weekly private sessions, or join a class, or do
both.
